Mustafa Akyol and Markus Dressler on Islam & liberty in Turkey
Is Islam compatible with liberal democracy? Political commentator Mustafa Akyol argues strongly in favour, and devoted his latest book to explaining why. In ‚Islam without Extremes: A Muslim Case for Liberty‘ he strives to provide the intellectual basis for reconciling Islam with religious, political, economic, and social freedoms.
On Thursday 29 November Akyol will be sharing his views on liberal Islam, and on his native Turkey in particular, in Leiden. Markus Dressler, Associate Professor of Social Sciences at Istanbul Technical University and an expert on Alevism in Turkey, will join him. Their discussion will be moderated by Lily Sprangers, director of the Turkey Institute. The event will start at 20.00 hrs.
This event is a collaboration of the Turkey Institute, Turkish Studies at Leiden University, and LUCIS. It is part of ‚Two Days of Debate on Turkey‘, a two-day program at Leiden University. Please click here for more information.
